Premios Principe de Asturias

Today the Prince of Asturias Awards will be held. On its 25th Anniversary, this are the Award Winners:

Communication and Humanities 2006: National Geographic Society

"(...) the National Geographic Society has played a crucial role throughout its history in exploring and discovering the Earth and in disseminating scientific advancement relating to Mankind’s historic, geographic and artistic heritage. Its publications and audiovisual productions are received by over three hundred million people on all five continents."

Social Sciences 2006: Mary Robinson

"(...) dedicated to the our culture’s most noble values, has been devoting her intense life to the struggle to overcome the obstacles that prevent many from exercising effectively their human rights, to the attainment of balanced international relations, and to the consolidation of humanist principles in our era’s globalized world, by offering her non-conformist, brave and far-reaching voice to those who cannot speak for themselves or can barely be heard".

Arts 2006: Pedro Almodovar

Letters 2006: Paul Auster

"(…) for the transformation in literature that he has wrought by blending the best of American and European traditions, for the innovation he has brought to narrative style in the cinema, and for integrating a number of devices used by the cinema into literature. Auster has managed to appeal to young readers by exploring new perspectives of reality and by providing an aesthetically pleasing, invaluable account of the problems faced by the individual and by social groups in our times".

Scientific and Technical Research 2006: Juan Ignacio Cirac
"(...)Professor Cirac is an international figurehead which has come up with some of the most brilliant and original ideas, both for quantum computing and in quantum theory of light and atomic physics.His contribution are being decisive in the development of completely secure communications, thanks to quantum ciphering methods, and in the building of computers that will be able to determine in seconds, calculations that exceed the current limits of supercomputers".

International Cooperation 2006: Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation
"The Jury appreciates (...) for exemplifying generosity and philanthropy in the face of the ills that ravage the world. The generosity of Bill and Melinda Gates is an invaluable contribution to international cooperation and an ethical benchmark to stir the consciences of all who have the responsibility and the means to help alleviate inequalities and the deprivation of so many millions of people".

Concord 2006: UNICEF

Sports 2006: Spain´s National Basket Team 2006
